The Irresistible Force

The dear departed Chrysostom Deligiannopoulos, Metropolitan of Argolis (1985), has served as a military priest in Albania during the war between Greece and Italy in 1940. The testimonials that follow are taken from his personal diary and from some oral narrations of his. They prove that Holy Communion is a great power that shielded strengthened Greek soldiers on the front.

...March 9, 1940. Day: Sunday. Quadragesima and the memory of 40 Martyrs. Mousolini himself is all along the front, in Albania, and leads the so-called spring attack.

I feel a mental exultation together with intense nervousness. We were about to start the service in the house we were staying when a sudden running fire and a shower of bullets broke out from the opposite artillery.

 Dear Father, how can we perform the service today?  Especially today, it's imperative that we make a service to be under the protection of God, I answered. The commander finally agreed and performed the divine service with the melodious chants of the soldiers, while outside, all the area had become a hell of fire.

In this service we experienced twice the glorious presence of God: two grenades barely touched the wall of our house, fell opposite of us and sank into the ground without exploding. In case of explosion, we would all be dead...

That day, the assistant commissioner, the adjutant and many soldiers of the regiment received the Holy Communion.

Finishing the divine service something sad occurred in order to give us a good lesson. A few soldiers, instead of attending the Mass, preferred to go and shelter themselves in an underground trench. One of the grenades landed there, killing four of them and injuring three. Also, one of them was found beheaded...

On Sunday, March 30, 1941, I set off early to reach the first battalion, where I preached and made a service. Around fifty men received Holy Communion. Even my hand got tired and hurt from the many hours giving the Holy Communion.

Another time, I had to perform the service kneeled inside a tent, because it was pouring outside. The soldiers attended the divine service in the heavy rain and in the end received the Holy Communion. It was such a touching picture! On steep mountains and heavy rain, soldiers were coming to be united with the Savior Christ!
