Saint Eustathios’ celebration

Saint Eustathios and his close family
On the 20th of September we celebrate the Saint and great Martyr Eustathios and that of his family, so let us say a few words : Saint Eustathios lived during the reign of Traianos and Adrianos, he was a pagan and his real name was Plakidas. He was an officer of the Roman army. One day, while at his hunt, he saw a deer that had between its corns a Cross and he heard a voice inviting him to believe in the true faith of Christ. The Saint believed and got baptised, taking the name Eustathios. His wife Tatiana followed him, who got the name Theopisti together with their two sons, Agapios and Theopistos.

When the emperor found out that his officer became a Christian, he dismissed him from his services and exiled him together with his family. On their way to exile, Saint Eustathios had to get separated from his family, he even had to become a beggar in order to survive. A few years after this, Traianos was in need of Saint Eustathios’ help and so he called him back to his army. The martial and military abilities of the Saint contributed at a great extent to lots of winnings of the emperor’s army. What is more, Saint Eustathios found again his family at a fight, who had endured a lot of hardships.

After some time, the successor of Traianos, Adrianos, asked from the Saint to attend to a sacrifice to pagan gods and he denied. Then, the emperor asked for a torturing machine made of brass to be built, to warm it in high temperatures and to throw inside the Saint and his family. Before that though, they asked to be allowed to pray. At their prayers they listened the Lord who told them that since they have suffered so many things with great patience and bravery they will be awarded with eternity joy in the heavenly kingdom.

Then the Saint and his family surrendered to the soldiers willingly, they were shut to this brass device and gave their soul to the Lord at 126 A.D. After a few days Adrianos asked to open it. And when they did, they saw that not even a single hair was burned. At first, they thought that they were alive and they got them out. When the crowd saw their intact and undamaged, started to shout “Great the Lord of Christians. He is the one and only true Lord”. Adrianos got scared and left. So, some Christians took the corps of the Saints secretly and they buried them devoutly and extreme care.

Saint Eustathios is considered to be the protector of the hunters.
